Using high-resolution satellite imagery and machine learning, researchers mapped six types of semi-natural open wetlands across 38 European countries at 10-metre resolution, also identifying where human land use has disturbed these ecosystems. The analysis reveals severe fragmentation: roughly a quarter to a third of wetland area occurs in patches smaller than 25 hectares, with many small sites invisible to coarser mapping products. Around 20% of wetland area shows signs of human disturbance, with inland wetlands most affected, and associated soil carbon losses are estimated at up to 5 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent relative to undisturbed conditions. Checking national commitments against the EU Nature Restoration Law's target of restoring at least 30% of degraded wetlands by 2030, the study finds some countries' pledges align with the estimates while others have made no quantified commitments despite having substantial areas in need of restoration. The maps offer a standardized, reproducible baseline for tracking progress toward EU restoration goals.
